Judaism in Kaifeng
The pictures below show how the Chinese Jews of Kaifeng read the Torah. The case containing the Torah is placed on the chair and opened. The reader stands in front, facing the West, and his hands hang down in the attitude of respect. His assistant unrolls the Scriptures as required and by the side stands a third person with one of the “Square Scriptures” in his hands, which he follows in order to prompt the reader if such should be necessary.
